📆“Gertie The Dinosaur, Gorilla Boss and The Comics Mind” Wayfarers director George Ferrandi in conversation with Steven Solomon Sunday 11/17 3:45 pm at Wayfarers. We have known each other for over ten years and The Comics Mind is strong in both of us. This promises to be a fun discussion/disagreement/argument about charming dinosaurs, less charming primates and much else. I will put up an Eventbrite invite as soon as I can get it together but mark this date on your calendars right this minute.
I love stickers. Some have even called me “Stickermeister”. (It sounded better than Sticker Fanboy at the time)
The README stickers are a tribute to Marvel Value Stamps. (Which, of course, were really Marvel De-Value Stamps, since cutting up your comics would ruin your comics collection and, thus, your life.)
Lifegiving Characteristics of the Value Stamps, which kind of represent that era in microcosm:
Misprints, off-registration color, insanely rushed production work by hardcore professionals (something that David Mazzuchelli pointed out as a creative constraint that lent so much of Bronze Age comics art and design its intentional-or-unintentionally great Watergate/pre-punk rock mania—I mean Gil Kane must have done 400 cover layouts in April 1974 alone!)
Assuming the files I have sent off to the printers (STICKER GIANT) are OK, they will be ready in time for Comic Arts Brooklyn and the Wayfarers opening, both on November 2, 2019.
READ ME: save me
master planning from a non planner
There is a lot happening in the next few weeks, culminating in my first solo painting show at Wayfarers in Bushwick, Brooklyn.
Heaven only knows, events and public gatherings of any and all kinds are a pain in the ass, especially any that require any sort of “advance planning” or “organization”. And yet… but also… events can also be FUN. Sometimes.
JUST THE FACTS, MA’AM:
• Gowanus Open Studios Saturday, October 19 and Sunday, October 20
Noon-6 pm. I will be doing Laundry Room FIVE: “READ ME (an introduction).
A preview of the upcoming solo show, featuring one five yard Speed Paste Robot pushpinned across a relatively small room. If all goes well, the new READ ME tshirt will be available, plus a sticker or two.

• Comic Arts Brooklyn Saturday, November 2 11 am-7 pm
(though I will leave by 6 since my show opens at 7 pm)
Wayfarers and Speed Paste Robot have been generously granted a table at CAB to let our people (you know, COMICS MIND PEOPLE) know what we are up to. Just the notion of Aline Kominsky-Crumb (AKA THE BUNCH) passing by and perhaps noting an ink-splattered, text-based gorilla painting on paper of mine makes this one of the potentially most exciting life moments. I fervently hope to have the new READ ME tshirt as well as YOU SHALL NOT OPPRESS A STRANGER tees and some more new stickers and small paintings available. Comic Arts Brooklyn is a really great gathering, totally worth checking out.
• Wayfarers, Brooklyn Saturday, November 2 7-10 pm READ ME.
The opening to my month long exhibit, READ ME. The plan is for READ ME to feature a set of recent, Flirting Scholar-influenced 5 yard, paintings on paper as well as a range of work from sketchbooks to other stuff. Wayfarers is an artist-run studio program, art space, and psychic home base for creative action in Brooklyn, NY.

The show will run through November 24th, with regular hours every Saturday and Sunday, plus irregular hours by appointment (email me, please-DMs, texts, MySpace messages and other stuff won’t work for this.)
We will do some kind of further events in the course of the exhibit like an “artist’s argument” with some frenemies who will argue with me in public about Batman and the Comics Code Authority. Stay tuned.
More random thoughts and obsessive mantras to be posted on this blog as well as various pernicious roach-motel-personal-data-parasite-silos elsewhere .
The whole idea is to do a blog instead of a portfolio site and putting stuff here as the primary resource rather than some data-farming, soylent green hellhole social media waste of time, energy, blood, treasure, human life (yours and mine).
The work SHOULD SPEAK FOR ITSELF.
Thank you Steve Englehart and Sal Buscema for our glorious childhood.

The best project is NO PROJECT. Just the raw materials of words mind paper glue scissors ink splatter.
I like “projects” and “ideas” but ultimately these are candy wrappers, useful fictions.
